17,150. Pawel, F. Aug. 2. Excavating. - Apparatus for excavating or loosening hard or rocky soil in connection with earthworks is shown diagrammatically in Figs. 1 and 2. The apparatus consists of two or more members 1, 2, hinged together and carrying the rotary working tools 3, 3<a> on the top member. The members can be adjusted on their pivots or shafts 4, 5, and the tool drums can be rotated in any position by worm and bevel gear from the main driving-shaft 4. The upper member 2 is adjusted through the worm-wheels 31, the worms 30, and the bevel gears on the shafts 32, 26. The lower member 1 is adjusted through the wormwheels 23, the worms 22 on the shafts 21, and the bevel gears on the shafts 17, 15. To avoid shaking or vibration, the spring connection shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is arranged between the worm-wheels 31 and the member 2, or between the worm-wheels 23 and the member 1. The tool drums are rotated in one or other direction through the bevel gears 7, 9, 10, and 12, and the vertical shafts 8, 11. The members and the shafts may be made telescopic, and the apparatus can be adjusted for undermining purposes or working embankments.
